Saint Peter’s Church, known worldwide as the “Jazz Church,” will present its 38th Annual All Nite Soul on October 12, 2008, beginning with Jazz Vespers at 5 PM and continuing at 7 PM with over 150 musicians performing live music until early Monday morning, Columbus Day. Homemade “soul food” will be sold in the Hungry Souls Café.

All Nite Soul, a benefit for the Jazz Ministry, annually honors major figures in the jazz world. This year’s honorees are trombonist Benny Powell and pianist Jane Jarvis. Both are highly respected and loved in the jazz community and have long-standing connections with The Jazz Ministry.

Listening to Roots and Voicing Branches: Transnational Freedom Songs of the Black Atlantic" is a multi-media performance piece that attempts to redress intra-racial tensions in the African Diaspora through the sonic and visual presentation of the Black Atlantic's cultural memory. Written by African vocalist Somi and African-American vocalist Chanda Rule, the two women introduce new modes of listening to indexical Black histories. By using Jazz as the foundation of their musical conversation, the piece strives to carve out a new space of cultural belonging and exchange, while the artists weave between song, (dis)harmony, and spoken word - creating acoustically and electronically layered textures of rhythm, movement, textuality, and sound.
